Giving Teenagers a Voice Straight from the Horse's Mouth

Teenagers aren't acting out. They're crying out.

Behind the slammed doors, the shouting, the silence, the struggles with food, self-harm and sometimes even suicidal thoughts, there is often a young person desperately trying to communicate something they don't yet have the words to explain.

When nobody seems to be listening, behaviour becomes their language, and sometimes young people are, quite literally, dying to be heard.

For more than thirty years, Wendy Firmin-Price has worked with teenagers who have been labelled difficult, disruptive, withdrawn, anxious or beyond help. At the HEART Centre in Surrey, these young people discover an extraordinary kind of teacher in a herd of horses who have no interest in their academic achievements, social status, diagnoses or the brave faces they present to the world.

Horses have an uncanny ability to pick up on what we are feeling, even when our words tell a different story. A teenager who insists they're fine may discover that the horse responds very differently when they finally acknowledge their fear, frustration or sadness. For some, this becomes the first opportunity in a long time to feel accepted without having to pretend to be someone they're not.

Yet one of the most surprising discoveries Wendy shares is that sometimes the greatest transformation happens when the adults begin to recognise their own emotional struggles.

When a pony walks past a girl experiencing panic attacks and chooses to stand quietly beside her frightened mother, it raises a question few parents have ever considered. Could our children sometimes be expressing the very emotions we have become so good at hiding? In another remarkable story, a successful executive mother begins to recognise what lies beneath her polished exterior, and six months later her son is back at school.

Through moving, sometimes heartbreaking and often unexpectedly humorous stories, Dying to Be HEARD explores how teenagers can become mirrors for the adults around them, revealing family patterns, unspoken fears, inherited beliefs and emotional wounds that may have travelled through generations.

Inside this book, you'll discover:

Real stories from teenagers, parents and the horses who helped them find a different way forward, including deeply moving experiences of grief, suicide attempts, neurodivergence, identity and belonging.

Why behaviour that looks like defiance, laziness or attention-seeking may be communicating fear, shame, grief or emotional overwhelm.

How parents can unknowingly pass their own worries, expectations and beliefs to their children, despite having the very best intentions.

Why so many young people struggle with self-worth and how the need for approval can shape their relationships, decisions and sense of identity.

What horses can teach us about communication, boundaries, trust, emotional honesty and the importance of being truly present.

Practical reflections, Wendy's Whispers, Pony Ponderings and memorable Wendyisms to help readers put these insights into practice, whether they have access to horses or not.

A thought-provoking interview with Karl Lokko, former gang leader and founder of Black Seed, exploring courage, choices and the life-changing moment when caution no longer meant cowardice.

Wendy's understanding of troubled teenagers is deeply personal. Long before she became a therapeutic coach, she was a wayward young girl struggling with her parents' divorce, seeking comfort in food and heading towards a future that could easily have taken a very different direction. Then a stroppy little black Welsh Mountain pony called Tiggy came into her life and gave her something she hadn't realised she was searching for: a sense of belonging, purpose and unconditional connection.

Blending her own experiences with spiritual psychology, therapeutic insight, the wisdom of horses and the voices of teenagers themselves, Wendy challenges many of the assumptions we make about young people and invites us to look beyond the behaviour to understand the person beneath it.

Dying to Be HEARD is for parents, grandparents, teachers, therapists, carers and teenagers, but it is equally relevant to anyone who remembers what it felt like to be misunderstood, overlooked or unable to express what was really going on inside.

Because perhaps the greatest gift we can give another human being isn't the answer to their problems, but the willingness to listen long enough to understand them.

And when we change the way we listen, we may just change a life.

WHAT READERS SAY

Review for your eBook

Chantal

Coach Practitioner

“Dying To Be Heard is a powerful reminder of how important it is to truly listen, understand and connect with young people and look beyond their behaviours to explore what might be happening beneath the surface. A valuable read for parents, carers and professionals working with children and young people. Bringing together the importance of connection, compassion and the true magic of horses.”

Helen Wilson

Coach Practitioner

“I went in with the expectation of increasing my toolkit to support young people - I never expected the book to align on a different level with where I am now. Teenage years vs surgical menopause - hormones make the the path tougher either way!.”
